The NY Knickerbockers’ brawl confirmed what people think about the NBA players. People think that these guys are fools, thugs and hoodlums. Yeah we know they fight in the NHL and the papers give those guys a pass but we’re talking about the NBA right now. The NY Daily News called them “Flagrant Fools” and that is the same sentiment that many people have about the NYC public high school athletes.
Thomas Jefferson and Robeson High School gave people reason to continue to think badly of the NYC public school student, after the brawl that they had over at Robeson. What really irks me is that the prinicpals of those schools are trying to defend the behavior of their players. There’s no defense to fighting on the court and causing an all out brawl in the process, and more importantly, confirming the sentiment that the players are thugs and hoodlums. This is why the PSAL (Public Schools Athletic Association) is forced to bring out the army when there are big basketball games. The Catholic Schools don’t have that problem. Going to a Public School game is like going to visit someone in prison.
The coaches, principals, players and fans all have to take some of the blame. As soon as your player makes any remarks on the court to another player, fan, ref, coach, anyone, he should be removed from the game by his coach immediately, even if he is your star player. Otherwise, guess what, brawls occur.
Hopefully we will not see another brawl in the PSAL this year.
